Dumfries and Galloway is a photographer's paradise by Matt Ward

Dumfries and Galloway is a photographer's paradise… let me tell you why.

Firstly, I will start by stating the things that D&G doesn't have. And that is mountains.

Now I will tell you all the things that it does have:

Castles, Forests, Lochs, Coastline, Big Hills, Rivers, Waterfalls, Rapids, Deer, Eagle, Red Kite, Snow (most of winter anyway) Dark night skies. Incredible architecture. The list goes on.

Apologies, I missed one other thing that D&G doesn’t have…. crowds.

I have photographed dozens of places in the area and I can honestly say that the number of other photographers that I have met whilst doing it is….. THREE. And 2 of those were at the same place on the same day. So in 3 years of working and living in the area as a full time landscape photographer I have met 3 photographers.

Compare that to the famous boathouse on Ullswater last Autumn when I must have been one of a dozen photographers lined up along the shore waiting for a sunrise.

Dumfries and Galloway is a photographer’s paradise. It may not have mountains but it has pretty much everything else that you could wish for.

Below is a small sample of just some of my images taken in the last 3 years in the area. Every one was taken in D&G.
