Take your landscape photography work to a new level by attending one of my landscape photography workshops.
I run 1 to 1, 1 to 2 and group workshops. Group sessions will follow a prescribed itinerary whereas 1 to 1 sessions will be tailored to suit you. After you have booked an individual workshop I will be in touch to go through in detail your skill level and what you are specifically looking to achieve. If you decide to go for a group workshop the course itinerary will be sent to you shortly before the workshop date. This is a loose guide as to what we will go through on the day as we may find that the workshop progresses differently to what we expect.
I am also able to offer guided photography tours in the beautiful, and often overlooked, Dumfries and Galloway. For those looking photograph to the more distinctive Highlands and the Lake District, I have an excellent knowledge of both locations and am delighted to be able to offer workshops here. Please see below for example itineraries of 1 to 1 sessions. Group sessions will be published and advertised periodically.
No Car? No problem! I am happy to pick you up from a train station, bus station or airport. Please contact mefor details.
Use the code MULTIPLE to receive 10% off when you purchase 2 or more workshops. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to book your workshops.
The below are examples of real courses, however locations and itineraries will be adapted to suit your specific wants and need.
Lake District - Ullswater & Keswick
Starting at the North East end of Ullswater we will stop first at the iconic Boathouse before moving on to Aira Force. This is a great place to practice long exposures, and as well as the falls itself, it provides some lovely locations in and around the woods to practice our composition. After this, we will take the shortish (30 mins) drive to Keswick where we will go to Brandlehow woods and photograph the bluebells. After a break for food, we will move over to the other side of Derwent Water and photograph the various islands before making our way to Ashiness Bridge – another great chance to work on long exposures. Keeping our fingers crossed for a sunset, we can either make our way to Ashiness Jetty or Castlerigg Stone.
Price is £125. Lunch is not included. Please ensure you wear appropriate footwear and clothing and bring wet weather gear and a storm guard for your equipment. I also recommend bringing ND filters (solid and graduated) however I do have some equipment that you can use.
Thornhill and the surrounding area (Dumfries and Galloway)
This is a fabulous location for landscape photography and unfortunately often overlooked. However, this does mean that you will get the chance to capture some images that you don’t always see.
We will meet at my studio in Thornhill from which we will head North of Thornhill to the Dalveen pass, where there is a lovely waterfall and beautiful stream – great places to learn about long exposure photography. From here, we will drive back towards Thornhill to either Carron Linns or Nith Linns – both are rivers which form rapids making for many different interesting compositions. After this, we will stop for something to eat before making our way to Drumlanrig Castle where we can photograph the castle and grounds from many different angles. This really is a fantastic location, with an abundance of wildlife, plant life, rivers, sculptures and much more. After we have finished at Drumlanrig Castle, we will go to Morton Castle – an atmospheric 13th century ruin surrounded on 3 sides by a moat; a perfect place to capture a sunset.
Price is £125. Lunch is not included. Please ensure you wear appropriate footwear and clothing and bring wet weather gear and a storm guard for your equipment. A DSLR or similar camera, lenses and tripod will be the bare minimum equipment needed. I also recommend bringing ND filters (solid and graduated) however I do have some equipment that you can use.
The above are examples of a day’s shoot and will be dependent on time of year and weather. Tutorial days will last between 6 and 8 hours and will finish approximately 30 minutes after sunset so your start time will be tailored around this.
Meeting at possibly my favourite shop, The Green Welly Stop, we will make our way north along the A82 for a few miles to Glen Orchy. Here we will practice long exposure and work on our composition, capturing the fast flowing rapids - a real sight when in spate. After Glen Orchy, we will travel further north to take in Rannoch Moor. From here, we will take in 2 of Scotland's most iconic features - Blackrock Cottage and the incredible Buchaille Etive Mor. After breaking for lunch, we will head down Glen Etive where we may be lucky to spy some deer, but if not there is plenty to do with incredible views along the River Etive. After this, we will head North for the final part of our workshop - the legendary Glen Coe.
Price is £175.
Capturing the Milky Way
For those with a keen interest in the stars, this is the perfect course.
Meeting at my studio in Thornhill just after sunset, we will go to a location that has previously been discussed to capture the milky way. Location choices include Morton Castle, Caerlaverlock Castle, Loch Ettrick, Galloway Forest or Drumlanrig Castle.
The tutorial will last approximately 4 hours, and will include information on how to find the milky way, using an app and manually, and how to capture it. We will also discuss using multiple exposures to make the most of your foreground.
Price is £75. Please ensure you wear appropriate footwear and clothing and bring a coat, gloves hat etc. A DSLR or similar camera, lenses and tripod will be the bare minimum equipment needed.
Photoshop and Lightroom (inc Adobe Bridge and Camera Raw)
Do you want to take your photographs to the next level? Then learning Lightroom and Photoshop may be the answer. Learn to harness the awesome power of the digital darkroom. Join me for a tailored session or block of sessions as I teach you Photoshop or Lightroom. You will also receive ongoing email support via email for 30 days after your last session.
For children living locally to Thornhill I am pleased to offer 1 to 1 and 1 to 2 sessions. These are run on an hourly basis and are charged at £20 per hour for 1 to 1 and £15 an hour for 1 to 2 sessions. A block of 6 can also be bought for the price of 5 which, depending on the child’s progress, will take your child right through from the camera basics to learning about editing. I have a range of equipment that the child can use and this is included within the session fee. All digital images taken by your child will be available for you to keep at no additional charge.
Please note that I cannot offer refunds due to bad weather, however I am more than happy to transfer your booking to another date. For daytime workshops, except in extreme bad weather, I would encourage you to continue with the workshop. For milky way workshops, this is obviously not possible and does require a clear night so we can move to another date at short notice.age
